About

The society was officially founded on May 22, 1989 by a group of prairie enthusiasts. The main purpose of the society was to restore prairie habitat located in Eunice, LA. Since then, the society has expanded its purpose, amount of prairie restored and membership. We have also received our non-profit status.

Projects

The society holds many events which include tours, speakers, restoration projects, land acquisitions and fun social events.

The Cajun Prairie Habitat Preservation Society is a 501(c)(3) organization that is dedicated to studying, preserving, restoring, and educating the public about the Cajun Prairie Habitat, associated habitats and projects. Donations to the Cajun Prairie Habitat Preservation Society are tax deductible, as allowed by law.

Get Involved

We provide courses in the history and methods of prairie restoration. We organize public lectures and presentations as well as online communities and public actions to convey prairie restoration to a broader audience.

Cajun Prairie Habitat Preservation Society Spring Meeting and Tours 

Saturday May 8, 2021

8:00 AM: Tours of Duralde Restored Prairie. Directions: Take LA 13 north out of Eunice and after crossing a bridge, go about 1.5 miles and turn left onto La 374. If coming from the north on La 13, about 6 miles south of Mamou, just past the Fire Station, turn right onto La 374. Follow La 374 west and it will take a sharp right then a sharp left. After straightening out from the sharp left, go about 0.5 miles and turn left at the first double intersection. You will be turning left onto a gravel road that is Navy Road. Navy Road is about 2 miles from La 13. Follow Navy Road and it will take a sharp right and then will start a sharp left, but you will not turn at the left but drive straight into Duralde Prairie. 10:30 AM: Eunice Restored Prairies, Spring Meeting and Plant Auction. The meeting will be held under the shade structure, bring your own lunch and a chair; meet at the corners of Martin Luther King and East Magnolia (510 East Magnolia, Eunice, LA 70535) and enjoy the best restored prairie in the United States. This site is north of U.S. 190 and east of La 13. For those of you coming from the north on La 13, turn left (east) at the first paved road (East Magnolia) to the east after you cross the railroad tracks in Eunice. Go a couple of blocks and the prairie is on your left. For those coming from the east on U.S. 190 turn right (north) at the first red/green traffic light and follow Martin Luther King Drive for a couple of blocks and the prairie is on your left. For those coming from the west on U.S. 190, follow U.S. 190 through Eunice and after crossing a railroad track, go to the next red/green traffic light and turn left onto Martin Luther King Drive (See above). For those coming from the south on La 13, when you reach the stop sign, turn right onto Maple Ave. Follow Maple for about 3 or 4 blocks and at the 2nd four way stop sign, turn left onto Martin Luther King Drive. Follow this street across U.S. 190 and see above. *Please bring plants to donate for our annual plant auction.

Dues for 2020 are past due now, as they are on an annual basis, beginning in January. Our dues remain at $20 individual or $25 family. You may pay one or more years at a time, but after 3 years of no payments, your membership will expire. If you would like to know the date of your last dues payment we received, just send me an email and I will reply. We depend on members’ dues and donations for the day-to-day maintenance of our prairies. We have ongoing expenses for trimming the trails, fighting invasive species, and burning the prairies. Simply click on the ‘JOIN’ link at the top of the home page. You will see “Pay your dues with a credit card or PayPal account” and a ‘BUY NOW’ button, with the dues rates. On that page, you may also print out a PDF Membership-Donation form to mail with your check for your dues or donations. Beneath the ‘JOIN’ link is the ‘DONATE’ link, where you may go to donate to the CPHPS Current Projects Fund using the PayPal ‘Donate’ button. The ‘DONATE’ page has a reminder and link to use Amazon Smile; and choose the CPHPS as your chosen charity or a link to “Build Our Endowment”.
